Summary

The All Progressives Congress in Gombe State has adopted Dr. Jamilu Shaiyaku Gwamna a former Managing Director of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 general election, in a decision reached at an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting presided over by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya on Sunday, May 3, 2026. The announcement effectively sidelines former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Prof. Isa Pantami and incumbent Gombe Central Senator Danjuma Goje from the race both of whom were absent from the meeting. The party simultaneously ratified consensus candidates for all three senatorial districts, six federal constituencies, and all 24 state assembly seats. Gwamna’s Pantami support group has since rejected the arrangement, alleging it violates President Tinubu’s instructions.

The political terrain in Gombe State shifted decisively on Sunday as the All Progressives Congress moved to lock in its 2027 electoral slate through a sweeping consensus arrangement crowning a relatively low-profile technocrat as the party’s choice for governor while simultaneously closing the door on two of the state’s most prominent political figures.

The APC in Gombe has announced Jamilu Gwamna as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 elections, with the decision reached at an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting presided over by Governor Inuwa Yahaya. Gwamna, a former managing director of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, was described by Governor Yahaya as a capable and experienced figure with the political strength required to lead the party to victory in 2027. In his acceptance remarks, Gwamna expressed appreciation to the party, pledging: “I am deeply honoured by this endorsement and the trust placed in me. I assure you of my commitment to sustaining the developmental strides of this administration and taking Gombe State to greater heights.”

The meeting was comprehensive in its scope. Beyond the governorship, the session ratified consensus candidates for all three senatorial districts, six House of Representatives constituencies, and all 24 state assembly seats a wholesale determination of the party’s 2027 slate in a single sitting that reflects Governor Yahaya’s determination to present a consolidated and friction free front going into the election cycle. For the Senate, the party adopted Mohammed Ahmadu Deba for Gombe Central, Jerry Damara for Gombe South, and Governor Inuwa Yahaya himself for Gombe North positioning the outgoing governor for a senatorial berth upon completion of his term.

The most politically significant dimension of Sunday’s announcement is not who was chosen but who was left out. The decision has edged out incumbent Gombe Central Senator Danjuma Goje from the 2027 senatorial race, while Prof. Isa Pantami the immediate past Minister of Communications and Digital Economy who had been widely touted as the preferred governorship candidate also lost out in the race. Notable political figures were absent from the meeting, including the Minister of Transport Sa’idu Alkali, former Governor Goje, and Pantami, both of whom are believed to have been governorship aspirants.

The exclusion of Pantami has already generated immediate pushback. A Pantami support group rejected the Gombe APC consensus arrangement, saying the action violates President Tinubu’s instructions a claim that, if substantiated, could escalate the intra party dispute beyond the state level and draw federal party leadership into what Governor Yahaya has framed as a settled internal matter.

Governor Yahaya, addressing the stakeholders’ meeting, described the decision as a product of genuine consultation and collective resolve: “This decision is a product of broad based consultations and agreement among key stakeholders across the state. It demonstrates our unity of purpose and collective resolve to consolidate on the gains we have recorded over the years.”

Analysis

The Gombe APC’s consensus exercise is a textbook demonstration of how a sitting governor uses the machinery of incumbency to shape the political succession that will follow his tenure and the Gwamna selection tells a revealing story about what Governor Yahaya was optimising for. Pantami, with his national profile, federal government connections, and established public identity, would have brought independent political weight to the governorship weight that might have made him harder to manage as a successor. Gwamna, a technocrat whose public profile is considerably more modest, arrives at the governorship doorstep as a candidate who owes his elevation entirely to Yahaya’s endorsement and stakeholder network. That dynamic is not unusual in Nigerian politics sitting governors routinely prefer successors whose loyalty is structural rather than independent. But it carries risks that the APC in Gombe will need to manage carefully. Pantami’s support base, already vocal in its rejection of the arrangement, represents a genuine reservoir of political energy and mobilisation capacity that an excluded faction could deploy disruptively ahead of 2027. The invocation of President Tinubu’s alleged instructions adds a layer of national political complexity that Governor Yahaya would prefer to avoid and that the APC national leadership will be watching closely. The question Gwamna must now answer is whether he can build a political identity that stands independently of the governor’s patronage before election day and whether the Gombe APC can contain its excluded aspirants well enough to present the united front that consensus arrangements are specifically designed to produce.
